At the same time,<strong>\u00a0the technology revolution<\/strong> has also created a dichotomy \u2013 it <strong>has resulted in a skills deficit<\/strong>\u00a0where the workforce is simply not prepared for the future.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>According to the latest World Economic Forum report entitled <a href=\"http:\/\/www3.weforum.org\/docs\/WEF_Future_of_Jobs_2020.pdf\"><strong>The Future of Jobs,<\/strong><\/a><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong> the ability for global companies to harness the growth potential of new technology adoption is hindered by skills shortages. In fact, when deep-diving into the manufacturing sector specifically,\u00a0<strong>67.7% of respondents<\/strong> identified the skills gap as\u00a0one of the\u00a0biggest barriers\u00a0to the adoption of new technologies.\u00a0It is\u00a0expected that <strong>14% of workers<\/strong>\u00a0are at risk of displacement in that industry alone.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/erp-and-technology\/learning-strategies-for-the-new-world-of-work\/\"><strong>It is therefore up to CHROs\u00a0and business leaders\u00a0to build the right skills\u00a0and enable the remote workforce in preparation for the future of work.<\/strong> <\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Here are some considerations:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h2><strong>1. Build the right industry skills\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>As manufacturers and distributors consider the technology needed to enable the future of work, they need to also understand the types of skills necessary for success.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The WEF report identifies\u00a0a list of top emerging skills in the sector. <\/strong><strong>The top five are listed as follows:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Technology use, monitoring, and control<\/li>\n<li>Critical thinking and analysis<\/li>\n<li>Active learning and learning strategies<\/li>\n<li>Leadership and social in\ufb02uence<\/li>\n<li>Analytical thinking and innovation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/erp-implementation\/adopting-technology-and-upskilling-employees-is-vital-during-covid-19\/\"><strong>As you can see, the ability to\u00a0optimize the use of technology is a top priority<\/strong>,<\/a> but\u00a0soft skills, social skills and analytical skills\u00a0are now playing a much greater role in the industry.\u00a0The challenge is that softer skills are often undervalued by organizations, who tend to focus\u00a0on\u00a0training initiatives\u00a0in more tangible, harder skills.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2. Ensure that you consider the needs of a remote workforce<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>When the pandemic struck, entire workforces had to\u00a0suddenly collaborate remotely, interact with new technologies and face the prospect of being replaced by automation.\u00a0WEF calls this \u2018double-disruption\u2019\u00a0to the\u00a0already burgeoning skills gap, where\u00a0businesses\u00a0were suddenly faced with the need to implement collaborative technologies, and employees needed the right skills to use them\u00a0effectively.<\/p>\n<p>Findings within our\u00a0recent study\u00a0entitled\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.syspro.com\/brochure\/report-the-inflection-point-for-the-factory-of-the-future\/\"><strong>\u2018The Inflection Point for the Factory of the Future\u2019<\/strong>,<\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>revealed that\u00a0recent\u00a0lockdowns\u00a0resulted in the inability for\u00a0\u00a047% of\u00a0manufacturing and distribution\u00a0businesses\u00a0to function effectively.\u00a0This was due to a combination of ineffective business systems\u00a0and\u00a0manual processes, resulting in\u00a0an inability for\u00a0staff members to operate efficiently.<\/p>\n<p>In a shift towards remote work and increased collaboration, <strong>73% of businesses<\/strong> stated they would need to invest in technology to facilitate remote working capabilities in the future. What is particularly interesting, is that almost half <strong>(45%) of businesses<\/strong> have realized that they could lose talent in the future if they do not embrace remote working moving forward. Training initiatives to enable the remote workforce are therefore imperative.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>3. Augment jobs, don\u2019t just replace people<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The WEF \u2018<em>Future of Jobs\u2019<\/em> report also refers to\u00a0the augmentation of key job tasks.<strong> By 2024, humans will facilitate only 38.3% of information and data processing,\u00a044.1% of manual work\u00a0activities, and 46% of looking for and receiving job-related information.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0In general,\u00a0by 2025, the time spent on current tasks at work by humans and machines will be equal.<\/p>\n<p>Jobs focused on manual processing will, therefore, be augmented by emerging technologies such as AI.
