This year marks the 50th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary of Earth Day<\/strong>,\u00a0the world\u2019s largest environmental movement to drive transformative change for people and planet. Over the last few weeks, social media\u00a0and traditional media\u00a0have\u00a0been\u00a0abuzz\u00a0with stories around how the lockdown has had a positive impact on the environment.\u00a0In China, carbon emissions were\u00a0reduced by\u00a018 percent between early February and mid-March due to falls in coal consumption and industrial output, according to calculations first published by climate science and policy website\u00a0CarbonBrief.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Although air pollution has decreased, experts say the effects are only temporary.\u00a0The question is how do we all contribute to ongoing environmental sustainability in a post COVID-19 world?<\/strong><\/p>\n

With a shared vision for ongoing sustainability, manufacturers can make a long-term impact\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>by\u00a0improving the efficiency of equipment and processes, lowering\u00a0energy\u00a0and water\u00a0consumption, increasing the use of renewables,\u00a0reducing\u00a0waste, emissions\u00a0and packaging,\u00a0as well as\u00a0using\u00a0fewer raw\u00a0materials.\u00a0The\u00a0manufacturing sector\u00a0within APAC\u00a0could\u00a0look into\u00a0a number of renewable energy options to make that a reality:<\/p>\n

Wind and Solar<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Wind and solar\u00a0energy are becoming\u00a0more\u00a0cost-competitive\u00a0and this means the transition to clean renewable energies is either in progress or planned by heavy industries. Now that renewables\u00a0account\u00a0for an ever-rising share of Australia’s power mix, supplying\u00a0about\u00a020 percent of demand, the transition is already in full swing.\u00a0Australia has no excuse really as we have\u00a0the highest average solar radiation per square\u00a0metre\u00a0of any continent, so manufacturers, who usually have extensive roof space,\u00a0can harness the\u00a0power\u00a0of the greatest\u00a0free energy source available \u2013 the sun.<\/p>\n

B&R Enclosures, an electrical\u00a0enclosures,\u00a0racks and\u00a0cabinet\u00a0manufacturer\u00a0and one our customers,\u00a0has just announced their piloted project at their\u00a0Brisbane facility by installing a solar energy system whilst using B&R product solutions. It has provided them with a range of benefits including significant cost savings and\u00a0allowed them to\u00a0be more environmentally responsible.<\/p>\n

Water Harvesting<\/strong><\/h2>\n

It\u2019s not just the sun or wind that manufacturers need to capture and use, as there has been an\u00a0increasing uptake of smart, water efficiency solutions,\u00a0including\u00a0rainwater harvesting, for non-potable uses. This offers manufacturers\u00a0a viable alternative\u00a0to using vast amounts of valuable and expensive drinking water in their production processes and for sewerage.\u00a0Many sustainability-focused\u00a0manufacturers\u00a0have seen\u00a0the sense in capturing this free resource\u00a0as well as introducing ways to be more efficient\u00a0in the use of\u00a0water with the aim of lowering their consumption.<\/p>\n

Sustainable packaging is good for profits as well as the planet<\/strong><\/h2>\n

There has been a huge generational shift in attitude towards one-use plastic,\u00a0and\u00a0consumers are now choosing to buy from brands they believe are doing social or environmental good.<\/p>\n

The reduction or removal of both paper and plastic in manufacturing, packaging and distribution and the recycling of these resources after use is essential and is already happening.\u00a0 Some manufacturers are\u00a0yet to sufficiently\u00a0prioritise\u00a0sustainability and circularity when considering design, use and disposal of packaging, with\u00a0a lot of\u00a0packaging still single-use and non-recyclable.<\/p>\n

Some of the smaller manufacturers are now\u00a0collaborating with larger ones to \u201cclose\u00a0the\u00a0plastic waste loop\u201d.\u00a0CSR collects its disused shrink-wrapped plastic\u00a0and sends it\u00a0to Plastic Forests, who\u00a0have used it to produce\u00a0air conditioning mounting blocks, which can also be used to dampen vibration on machinery such as compressors.<\/p>\n

Paperless manufacturing<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The paperless office has been a manufacturing objective sought for years. Saving costs and the environment are\u00a0achievable but going\u00a0paperless will take more than throwing out the office memos and printing\u00a0less. Paperless\u00a0manufacturing is\u00a0shifting the way\u00a0a manufacturing\u00a0plant operates.\u00a0Many of our manufacturing<\/a><\/strong> and distribution<\/strong><\/a> clients are using their ERP system <\/a><\/strong>to reduce manual processes and have moved to a paperless industrial environment, including B&R Enclosures, which has a predominantly paperless shop\u00a0floor and Independent Liquor Group, which is integrating its ERP with its paperless warehousing system.<\/p>\n

Grid-Scale Batteries<\/strong><\/h2>\n

As the industry\u00a0grapples with the\u00a0transition\u00a0to\u00a0renewables, batteries will be pivotal to providing capacity when the sun isn’t shining, when the wind isn’t blowing, and the market\u00a0demand requires it.<\/p>\n

One of Australia’s biggest batteries will be built by independent power supplier Vena Energy in\u00a0Wandoan,\u00a0Queensland\u00a0within\u00a0the next\u00a018 months under a deal involving energy giant AGL, which will strengthen the grid’s ability to shift from coal to renewable power generation by smoothing out the intermittent nature of wind and solar power.<\/p>\n

Although the grid-scale battery market is in its infancy, batteries are considered to be crucial in the nation’s move away from heavy-emitting coal-fired power stations, due to their capacity to store electricity generated from renewable sources and dispense it at a later time when conditions for renewables are\u00a0unfavourable.<\/p>\n

What does this mean?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Moving forward,\u00a0manufacturers need to make a commitment to do more with less\u00a0by building\u00a0sustainable practices into everyday operations.\u00a0ERP provides the solutions, processes and tools to assist you to manage your data and gain insights into your business.
