{"id":9282,"date":"2018-10-09T11:35:37","date_gmt":"2018-10-09T11:35:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sg.syspro.com\/blog\/the-machine-that-changed-the-world-or-an-introduction-to-lean-manufacturing-and-erp\/"},"modified":"2021-03-04T14:50:11","modified_gmt":"2021-03-04T14:50:11","slug":"the-machine-that-changed-the-world-or-an-introduction-to-lean-manufacturing-and-erp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sg.syspro.com\/blog\/erp-for-manufacturing\/the-machine-that-changed-the-world-or-an-introduction-to-lean-manufacturing-and-erp\/","title":{"rendered":"The Machine that Changed the World, or an Introduction to Lean Manufacturing and ERP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.syspro.com\/industries\/manufacturing\/industrial-machinery-software\/\"><strong>Industrial Machinery and Equipment market<\/strong><\/a> is all about machines \u2013 designing, making, modifying, selling, and using machines.\u00a0 But behind these machines, like the automobiles we see on the road, are the machines that made the parts that became the automobile\u2026and behind those machines sits an even bigger machine.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I borrowed the title from the book by the same name, written by Womack, Jones and Roos\u00a0 describing the biggest and most thorough study on the future of the automobile ever undertaken.<\/p>\n<p>So, what is the machine that changed the world?<\/p>\n<p>The automobile could be considered the most instrumental and therefore important machine, and the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.syspro.com\/industries\/manufacturing\/automotive-manufacturing-software\/\">automotive industry even more important<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 twice this century it has changed our fundamental ways of making things, how we work and what we buy, ultimately affecting how we think and live.\u00a0 Sales of automobiles are around 50 million units annually, and automobile manufacturing influences manufacturing in almost every industry on the planet (except the craft industry), with almost every industry looking to mass produce items in order to reduce cost and increase profit. However, automobile manufacturing techniques have hardly progressed since the moving assembly line installed by Henry Ford circa 1900.<\/p>\n<p>So, is the machine that changed the world the automobile?\u00a0 No.<\/p>\n<p>Since 1900, we have seen mass production of the automobile migrate from a craft industry, to grow and grow reaching unbelievable proportions, but with little modernization.<\/p>\n<p>We now live in an era that is seeing the demise of mass production, and the development of a new production system \u2013 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.syspro.com\/brochure\/five-tips-achieve-lean-manufacturing-business\/\">Lean Manufacturing.<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0 A production system that has challenged the very soul of Mass Production, and shown that it is not a sustainable model.\u00a0 Lean Manufacturing gives us the ability to make exactly what the customer wants while mass producing the items with significantly less resources.<\/p>\n<p>The principles of Lean can be applied to every industry, and adopted with significant benefits, but only when the organization realizes that it must change to survive!\u00a0 The Lean Manufacturing techniques were developed in the automobile industry, a subset of Industrial Machinery and Equipment and should fit any other subset of the industry easily.<\/p>\n<p>The machine that changed the world is Lean Manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p>Read the book, it is a good start to understanding where the world is going to be in the future and how to position yourself there \u2013 the overcapacity crisis that the world faces is nothing more than an oversupply of inefficient mass production capacity and an undersupply of competitive lean production capacity.<\/p>\n<p>In my next blog
